Tanzania: 20 Somali Immigrants Found Dead
Dar es Salaam — Tanzanian police found 20 dead Somali immigrants in a container on a vehicle, 200km from Dar Es Salaam near the border Tanzania shares with Zambia, Radio Garowe reports.
The Somalis who were found dead in the province of Morogoro, consisted of 17 men and 3 women who were illegal migrants found dead in container after they suffocated.
The Chief of Police for Morogoro province Adolphina Chialo told Reuters, "As our investigation is still pending we speculate that these victims died due to suffocation and heat exhaustion. Their bodies were found between 26 of December 2011 and January 1 2012."
Mr. Chialo added that 14 Somalis who are illegal migrants are in custody after they were found hiding their car in a forest.
Mr. Chialo did not comment on anyone who is in custody for the deaths of the 20 Somali immigrants.
Tanzania is a pit-stop for illegal migrants who are making their way to South Africa or heading north to Europe.
