Many residents of the troubled city of Kaduna Thursday, stayed away from the city centre over rumours that Muslims wanted to stage a demonstration.
Those who went to work immediate returned home for fear of the unknown in the city.
Some commercial banks were closed while many people stayed away from their offices.
The rumour is coming on the heels of the visit of the acting Inspector General, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar's visit to Kaduna.
However, the state government in text messages and radio announcements said the rumours were unfounded and urged residents to disregard it.
"The Kaduna State government is calling on people to disregard the current rumour being circulated alleging the eruption of crisis in Kaduna. The state is calm and people should go about their normal businesses" the state government said in a text message.
Both christians and Muslims have restricted their movements only to areas that they considered safe for them.
Some parents also rushed to schools to pick up their children.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up with armed soldiers and police seen patroling streets in trucks
