Africa Cup of Nations television blackout for Botswana fans
-
Local fans in Botswana may not be able to watch their national team in action on television during next year’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The Zebras will be making their debut at the continental event but huge demands of the right holders, Sportfive (a French company) has almost scuppered the chances of local fans of watching their team on terrestrial television.
According to state broadcaster, Botswana television (Btv), the right are demanding a staggering P15 million (about $2 million) to broadcast the game.
The state broadcaster’s budget for next year is P90 million ($11.6 million) and it is very unlikely they will approve amount for just one programme.
The issue of exorbitant fees for broadcast rights has blighted the tournament in recent times.
During the 2010 edition in Angola, countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Togo were engulfed in similar problems.
