  • Pinto da Costa becomes Sao Tome's president

    Communist-era strongman Manuel Pinto da Costa returned to power Saturday when he was invested as Sao Tome president after an election campaign based on fighting corruption.

    Twenty-one years after he lost office in the African archipelago, Pinto da Costa, who won August 7 presidential elections, reaffirmed his campaign promises "to fight against poverty and corruption."
